The Story Behind the Woman Who Created it All

Coco Chanel and Her Legacy

By Hiren Ajudia

It has become a norm for women of today to deck up before leaving their homes for any type of function. Leaving without the proper makeup and the matching purse is a big no-no. Adding on to this list of requirements, we see perfumes and other fragrances as a must do. One of the most popular essences is Chanel No. 5. This fragrance has been able to survive the test of time because it is popular till this date despite the fact that it had been launched in the 1920s.This fragrance says it all—Status, elegance, and style, and it is all owed to the designer who is known to the world as Coco Chanel. Her birth land was in another country, but yet her fame and fortune still touched the Americans and their lifestyle.

Everything about Coco Chanel radiated the never dying themes of status. Just as women find great joy in hiding their age today, Coco shared the same beliefs. Although she was born in 1883, she made herself seem younger than reality by claiming to be born in 1893. For her, 10 years was a significant chunk of time, and clearly social status had been important for her from the start.

Coco lived her early years as an orphan despite not actually being one. The death of her mother left her father with custody of five children, who was not able to take responsibility for them and sent them to an orphanage.  As soon as she was old enough to support herself, Coco left the orphanage and took up a typical job for a female—she worked as a tailor.
Here we see Coco Chanel posing for the camera. She could possibly be thinking about a new fashion statement or she could simply be enjoying the view.

For some, the war was a moment of disaster, but for Coco it was quite the opposite. During that time period, she had the chance to become a mistress and begin her commercial sales. At the age of 23, she began to design and create hats to divert her attention from the war, and they turned out to be a huge success.  Her success continued when she got her first millinery shop in Paris in 1910 with the help of her husband and her friend. On one side of her life, her husband’s death brought chaos into her life, but on the other side, her sales skyrocketed. From loose women’s jerseys, to setting fashion trends, she was on a role. Ignoring the common fashion, she created women’s jerseys and steered clear of the stiff corseted look of the time, and made a fashion statement with her bob haircut. Staples of the Chanel collection were created, which included her signature cardigan jacket, her little black dress, and her Chanel No. 5 perfume during this time period and became a huge hit because women felt that they were no longer restricted in the clothing styles of the past.

Working in the fashion industry till her last breath in 1971, Coco left a legacy of commitment, style, quality, and appearance for the ongoing generations. Since the fashion trends are changing as quickly as overnight in our world, the adherence of her products in our society is clearly saying something about her and her products. Chanel and her products made it through two of our world’s major conflicts—both World Wars and they still are popular today. The standard she set was so high that in addition to her company’s products being pricey, they also symbolize quality and comfort. Imagining a world void of such a woman and her vision for the future, we could have possibly not been introduced to such a fashion time period and standards. Chanel has proved to the world that conditions like poverty, orphan hood and other harsh situations cannot stand in the way of making a change.

Here comapny's logo is a symbol of quality and comfort. Has there ever been a woman as her in the fashion world?

"A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous."-Coco Chanel
